How do I find out my degree requirements?

Please take a look at this documentYou can also find the courses needed for your concentration online in your UCalgary account. After logging in go to “Program and Advising Info” and click on “Academic Requirements” to see what you have/have not completed.

 

If you have any questions, academic advising in the Undergraduate office, which is located on the second floor of Mathison Hall.

When do I declare a major? Can I change my major?

First and second-year courses are mostly generalized, however, by 3rd-year students must declare their major.

 

But don’t panic if you don’t know what to concentrate in. Many students struggle with this so don’t be afraid to talk to an advisor, professional, or working professional to learn more about the opportunities available in each!

What is the difference between a Junior and Senior option?

When can I start a Co-Op or a Study Abroad?

Are textbooks necessary? Are there alternatives?

Do I have to buy software for classes?

Junior options are courses at the 200 level 

Ex. RELS 201, GRST 209, SOCI 201

 

Senior options are courses at the 300+ level

Ex. ANTH 303, ECON 301, OPMA 403

After your second year.

If the course lists it as a requirement, it is advisable to use the textbook. The bookstore offers online and used textbooks as a cheaper alternative. Used textbooks can also be found online, and at Bound and Copied.

 

Keep in mind that some courses, such as SGMA 217, require you to purchase a textbook to access a code used for assignments. It’s best to consult the professor if you are uncertain.

Some courses will require you to use software that isn’t widely accessible/free to use, but is necessary for assignments and learning. That being said, all desktop computers on campus (Scurfield Labs, TFDL) will have the programs installed if you do not wish to purchase the programs.
